It’s actually ‘friars balsam’. Kind of a sticky dark liquid with a strong balsam smell. My grandmother in Cape Breton used to pour it on a spoonful of sugar when anyone had a sore throat. Pretty vile but it worked. I haven’t heard of it for years!!! Made my day, lol!
