Studio Oatcakes For One and All!!

When you pay a visit to Deanne Fitzpatrick's Rug Hooking Studio in Amherst NS, you know that the first thing besides a greeting you're going to receive is one of the studio's famous oatcakes. Last year alone we gave out over 900 oatcakes (the majority of these were probably eaten sneakily by staff). Since you're a member of WoolCake and that makes you pretty special to us, we decided you should be able to experience our trademark oatcake, even if you can't make it into the studio.

Studio Oatcake Recipe! :

  • 3 cups oats
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix all ingredients together, and work into softened butter and shortening. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into circles with a glass. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.

These are really good paired with peanut butter, maple butter, honey, cheddar cheese or a nice cup o' tea.

I had these when I visited your studio 2 years ago on my way to Newfoundland. They were yummy! Are they made with regular oats or the quick ones? The picture looks like the oats are pretty small so just wanted to check. Thanks so much for the recipe and all the great hooking support. I am a quilter but have always been interested in rug hooking. Darn your little poppy starter kit – I may have to start another stash of wool :)
