Nurture Retreat:
I have created a rug series called Women and the Moon. In some women are holding the moon, in some the women are taking down their hands to discover that the moon shines without them as they release themselves of the things they carry. Some of the letting go is natural and some is by choice. This series of rugs made me think a lot about responsibility and about nurturing ourselves, our soulfulness.
Lately I have been noticing how much my son looks like my father. His hair line, the way he stands takes me back to what it was for me to be a child. My father was a good nurturer, and as a child I sat by him as he carved birds. I always felt very important and very loved during those visits. It is a fond memory. As I look at my son I remember what it was to be nurtured and cared for as a child, and I see that the importance of nurturing does not go away for us. We continue to need it. As women we become the nurturers. This winter I want to think about what it is to be nurtured and look at how we as women must choose to do this for ourselves.
In this one day rug hooking retreat I plan to take you into a world of self care and nurture. As I write this it is January, we are knees deep in snow and cold and the wood fire is burning right below me. And I see that winter brings with it the need for rest and restoration. I feel it myself and I know others are feeling it too.
As women we carry so much love and so much responsibility. We expect a lot of ourselves and we give freely. This day will be a day for you and I to renew our commitment to our craft and to our own self care. We will look at little things and big things as we determine what is individually important to us. As we do this we will be hooking our rugs together, and I will teach a woman and the moon workshop as we do.
I have invited Stephanie Allen, the person I have relied on for over twenty years to help me with my own self care to join me for the day. Stephanie and I will lead you through a personal retreat as you hook on your own work or the Woman and the Moon kit that I am creating for this day long retreat.
Stephanie Allen has been weaving a tapestry of soulfulness through mind, body and emotion for over thirty years. She helps others find a way to be gentle with themselves in a world that is not always gentle. Self care through body work, mindfulness and imagination and self inquiry will be the focus of Stephanie's teaching through out the day. so you can go away with some simple restorative practices that you can use in your daily life.
The focus of my classes will be instructional about hooking women and the moon, the sea, the sky around it, but primarily the big moon and the woman! I will also be working with Stephanie throughout the day.
I have also invited a special guest rug hooker to join us for a special lesson!
