Ten ways to be a better rug hooker
  1. Start a habit of ten minutes a day. Make sure you hook everyday or at least five days a week for five or ten minutes. Build it into your routine. You can start by trying to do this for thirty days.
  2. Hold your hook gently instead of gripping it so hard. I suggest holding it like you would a baby's hand, so you don't create a lot of tension in your hands and arms as you hook.
  3. Leave your rug hooking out where you can see it. Put it in a beautiful basket by your favourite chair so it is ready for you. If you hide it away, it takes effort to get at it for just a few minutes.
  4. Keep a little sketchbook with all your ideas and rough sketches of things you would like to hook. You could also use this journal about the project you are working on if you like to journal.
  5. Take pictures of things or places you would like to hook and create an album on your phone of rug hooking ideas.
  6. Make sure your pattern is stretched tightly on your frame. A loose backing on the frame makes hooking harder. Your backing should be tight like a drum.
  7. Look at the rug you are working on from a distance or through the lease of your camera so you can see it better. It is amazing how different it looks at a distance.
  8. Join a rug hooking community online or in real life. Meeting other rug hookers will teach you lots and encourage you to hook more.
  9. Hook small pieces. Try a few 6 by 6 or 8 by 8 sized pieces so you can play and get some rugs done in a short time. It is amazing how encouraging it is to complete your rugs.
  10. Finish and hang your rugs on the wall so you can see them. Looking at your finished projects will teach you more about rug hooking than anything else.
