We were pretty poor. My aunt and mom lived with 5 kids in a 2 bedroom house so we weren’t allowed to play inside unless it was miserable out. Christmas was a colouring book, a small pack of crayons, Plastasine and a few pieces of Lego. It made being inside creative time for sure.

In my neighborhood we melted canyons to make candles. we ran out of our favorite colors so we came up with a scheme to go house to houses saying we were on a scavenger hunt and we needed a blue crayon. We were able to get just the colors we needed with out buying a whole box. People seemed happy to give them to us.
Judi
Ah crayons! I remember opening a new box and reveling in the smell and the explosion of colour and the uniformity of them all lined up. My favourite color was violet. I love when you bring up childhood memories and encourage us to do the same, Deanne. Now Crayola makes 120 size packs of crayons….I might faint if I got that! I was so upset when the crayons broke or got shorter with a lot of use.

Well didn’t this episode just move me to tears! Sometimes I wonder how I can best express my gratitude to you Deanne, for bringing this practice down to earth for me and consistently welcoming me to just show up to my work with willingness to be imperfect and curiosity for what will be revealed. This episode shows me that the best way is to keep showing up for myself, share it when I can and let it bring me joy. Your joy is infectious and my gratitude is overflowing. So many thanks for sharing your process and the work of others on your amazing team.

I always only had the small pack. When I was 13 I took a baby-sitting course and I baby sat my cousins.I used my pay to buy the 64 box.It even had a sharpener in it.I was so proud of having them and I remember being devestated when I broke my purple.

I always had a crayons and paper and colouring books in my life. The biggest thrill I remember is when I was teaching and Crayola came out with skin tones. I bought several boxes for my class and I have never seen so much excitement about colouring. Toronto being very diverse it was really hard to colour the various skin tones with blending. It was so funny watching everyone looking at each other and trying to match the crayons to the different skin tones in the class. So cute! Best lesson on acceptance.

Loved your outfits and dancing. Another awesome Thursday Live. The letter you shared is very special.

I don’t remember any NEW crayons. My sister is 15 months older than me and was always known as an artist so she may have got a new pack of 8 only. If we wanted other colours we could mix them out of what we had. There were lots of stubs of crayons.

This should have been titled, “How to cook a pumpkin in the wood stove”. That was so funny and yes, I would have tried it but would never have thought to put a pumpkin in our woodstove.
Deanne
So happy to be here with you and share the studio. Thank you for watching.

I was excited when they put more colours out. My babysitter would bring me crayons and show me art books at age 5. I loved them!
Teresa Heinze
I loved seeing the nice new points on the crayons and the way they smelled.
Brenda Lewis
We weren’t allowed to break them or take the wrappers off. Getting a pack of 64 was a rarity and an extra special event. Blues and greens have always been my favorite colors.
