One of the beauties I have discovered about rug hooking is that there is a meditative quality about it. When I hook I get lost, and in getting lost I find myself. To go to that neutral place, that place where my thoughts are humming, I need to hook. Often quietly by myself, but even in a group, that hand over hand pulling of wool through the linen will soothe me and take me to the centre of myself.
Neutrals are comforting, soft and safe. They make an artwork feel approachable and undemanding. It is why we are attracted to them I suppose. They do not expect too much of us, giving us a little zen. For me hooking in neutrals is a nice retreat from hooking with bold or vibrant colours. They are easy on the eyes and comforting to work with and offer a nice change from the more upbeat palettes that I'm sometimes attracted to.
