Take note of happiness

I am home at my house on a Wednesday evening. I made fresh pasta for supper with capers, eggplant and artichokes. It is cold outside. My husband and I sat in the living room and watched some local television as we ate. Then I cleaned the kitchen and made a cup of chai tea. An ordinary evening. I had just looked at pictures of friends on Facebook who are on the other side of the world and I just felt so glad to be home. And then I felt so glad that I felt glad to be home. That I could see that I have chosen what I actually want and that I am happy with that. Not happy enough, but happy, purely happy.

My wood stove has this place heated up like a sauna. The moon is full. I have a stack of books and a few favourite shows I enjoy in the evening. Today I took a rug off the frame and even made a little reel of it. Woo hoo. It feels like a party to me. A celebration of knowing what you want. Of knowing what you have is good.

There are times when you can truly see that your blessings are too numerous too count.

There are times when you feel truly grateful for everything you have.

There are times when you want or expect nothing more.

And it is important to notice those times. To be in those moments and relish them because in those times you are happy. And what good is happiness if you don't notice it.

I loved walking up to my studio tonight and seeing that moon glow into my window. I love that I can shed the day. I love that in this moment there is delight. And I love that right now I can see it as clearly as that moon. And I know this moment will pass and probably sometime again I will wonder if I should go far away, be more, do more, expect more. Yes that will come again sometime.

But not tonight. Tonight I'll just put my feet up and write to you because I wish for you the same. I wish that you will know the feeling of contentment, of being pleased with your situation, with your life. I wish that your heart will be content. And so I am sending you this letter to remind you, and to remind myself, to take note of happiness when we feel it, and to savour it, for it is a lovely thing, and it deserves to be noticed.
