Rainer Maria Rilke said,"The only journey is the one within."
I think no matter how far we travel it is the journey inside ourselves that is our real journey in life. For me these letters that I write to you are one of the ways I travel inside my own heart, inside my own life.
We all have a private singular journey in this world and it is the one that we travel within. Knowing ourselves, watching how we feel, think, and change is our own personal mystery. We are all on a road trip. Each and everyone of us.
Yesterday, I was speaking to Nina Bagley, an American artist, and she said, "What is it about seven years?" referring to her experience that she changes so fundamentally every seven years. She has been following and recounting her own journey in the jewelry and art she has been making for a life time. Art is a way of knowing, a way of seeing inside yourself. It is a mirror of our lives.
We do not have navel gaze or be self indulgently lost in yourself to see this. All you have to do is be aware and to notice. Every once in a while you have to think about your life, recount your story, and keep a few notes, even if they are just written upon your heart. Even if they are sewn together from bits of cloth, or hooked upon linen, or shaped in clay. In the making we can find ourselves and we can carry ourselves home.
Wherever we go, even if we travel the world, our singular story is going on inside of us, and that story is meaningful. Some of us can go no further than ten miles down the road, yet still we are on a quest. Each day is a path. Decisions must be made, ideas are sought and found, the possibility of enlightenment is at hand.
Each of us has our own mind that is deep and wide and capable of so much. A marvel really that we can contain a world of knowledge and experience, a bank of memory, and corridors of love within these fragile bodies that we call home.
So what could be wrong with travelling within? There is so much for each of us to find in that one little life we are given. In the fullness of time, no matter where we have gone we must come home to ourselves and it is good to know something about where you are going to.
