The oldest thing in my closet is my christening gown. It was my Dad’s so it is 96 years old. I kept it because it came from my parents homeland Belgium and it is handmade with Bruges lace and silk embroidery. It is a beautiful piece of needlework and meant a lot to the family.

The oldest garment in my closet is a petite blouse that was hand stitched by my petite great-grandmother in Oslo, Norway. Probably from the late 1800s.

I have a pair of wooden clogs from the 70’s and an old pair of houndstooth checked patterned tights from the 60’s ( repaired through the years with clear nail polish) and the very old silver thimble and case from my grandmother from 1900.

The oldest thing in my closet is my wedding dress (1975), but elsewhere in my home I’ve stored my christening gown and bonnet, and at least one wee dress made for me when I was born, along with four very early toys — a teddy bear, a stuffed lamb (from France), an early jointed doll and a Betsy-Wetsy doll! I’m just sentimental about old things that are part of my history.

I have a pair of Hawaiian shorts from my first year of university in 1983. I haul them out once a summer to wear for fun. My family rolls their collective eyes at me, but the shorts bring back great memories.

I’ve finally caught you live — good morning! (It’s 8:13 a.m. here in Alberta.) About old jewellry: I have several old rings. My maternal grandma’s engagement ring (1910) is my engagement ring. My father died when my mother was expecting me; the gold band he gave her when they married was my wedding band. I still wear it on my pinky finger (It shrunk!) and now I also have the engagement ring my father gave my mom (1940). I have other old jewellry too — favourites include two large silver pins I use on shawls.

Right now I’m hooking something I’ve designed myself; I got some more greens from you to do it. I’ll post photos on the FB group as I go. On Thanksgiving Monday my kids came, and were curious about the 2 small pieces I’ve hooked. My daughter was particularly interested, so I showed her how it’s done. A seed has been planted… Thanks for all you do to inspire us!
