I have been hooking rugs for three years. I have taken many of your courses and will no doubt take many more. I have loved each and everyone I have taken. This one is special. I have gotten so much out of it. I am embarking on my first large floor rug. It is five by seven feet. I am still in the process of getting the pattern on the backing. There is so much information in this course I have used and will use while making this rug. Each video lesson brought up something useful. It got to the point that I feel this course is a must for all rug hookers. I have a much better understanding of the history of rug hooking in North America especially in Newfoundland. Your guest speakers are experts in their area and their love and respect for the art and artists shines through. I could not wait for the next video. As a matter of fact I am going through the course again to ensure I did not miss anything and because I do not want the journey to end. Just incredible. A small example among many, I hear terms thrown around like ‘hit and miss’ and have a vague idea of this type of rug. You walk us through the origin of the ‘hit and miss’ rug then proceed to demonstrate hooking one in straight forward hands on instruction. By the time you were finished I felt I could confidently start one from start to finish. I could go on and on. Thank you so much for this course. I cannot sing it praises loud enough.

Kindest regards,

Jane Smith

“I cannot say enough good things about this course. Rebooting Tradition Online Course

The faded old rugs long forgotten from cottage floors and drafty houses are the inspiration to re-imagine the traditional colours and techniques in rug hooking from long ago to today. The old fashioned traditional hit and miss that my mom loved, the antique roses and simple motifs of traditional hooked rugs were the inspiration for these beautiful mats.

In this course we’ll discover the tradition of making rugs for the floor.

That is we’ll rediscover it.

One of the things I love about hooking rugs is that they are totally utilitarian. My grandmothers made rugs for the floor. They would never have considered making them as art for the wall. That is a new concept, one that has been around for now for thirty years or so. I think that since we have established that without question rugs can be art it is time to reboot tradition and look againat making rugs for the floor.

In this course I’ll go back to my roots of why I started making rugs in the first place, to warm the floors and decorate an old farm house.

With function in mind we’ll explore colour, design, and materials for hooking sturdy long lasting floor mats. We’ll focus on putting a twist on traditional designs so that they have a contemporary flair.

I have gathered a lot of research on the tradition of rug making which I will share with you. We’ll talk to experts on the history and traditions of rug hooking, as well as create several traditionally inspired designs for which we’ll provide the downloadable patterns for you.

This course will include lessons with Deane in her studio on making hooked rugs for the floor.
