Rug Hooking Notes, Thoughts and Ideas

The Three Bag Method for Landscape
Sort your wool into light greens, medium green and dark greens. Put them into three separate bags. Take a handful from the first bag and put it in the second bag. Take a handful from the second bag and put in the third bag. Use the lighter colours, bag 1 for the foreground. Use the second bag , the medium greens for the middle of the landscape, filling the lighters colours in the foreground. Use the darker colours from the third bag for the back hills. This is a simple method for hooking landscape. I like to add other elements, bits of texture, bits of grey or tan for rocks, in the midst of the landscape. What would happen if you put a bit of purple in the back hills, or a bit of royal blue? You will just have to try it to find out.
Wool Dying
Do not be afraid of dying wool. Start simplify you wish. Get yourself a package of Rit dye, or some other commercial brand that you are familiar with and follow the instructuctions on the package for washing machine dying. I do not really recommend these types of dyes, and prefer acid dyes or natural dyes for wool, but I know dying can be intimidating and if  a simple method might get you stated than it is worth a try. Dying wool can be really inspirational as the colours lead your mind in many different directions.
Mary Sheppard Burtons Book
Mary published A Passion for the Creative Life; Textiles to Lift the Spirit. Included in the book are many rugs and writings by Mary. She also graciously showcased the work of many  rug hookers from around the world. Some of the works of various Nova Scotia rug hookers, including  Sylvia MacDonald, Doris Eaton, Nancy Edell, and my own (Deanne Fitzpatrick)  were included in the book. You can contact Sign of the Hook Books at  216000 Davis Mill Road, Germantown, MD, 20876 to order your copy. It is a  372 page hard bound book.

London-Wul Farm
You can check out Heidi Wulfraat's fibreworks shop if you come to visit my studio. Heidi raises her own angora rabbits, carries spinning and knitting supplies. She has a fantastic selection of great fleece and wools if you like to play with texture. The studio has a gallery featuring fine artists, and hosts workshops.  Knitters meet every Wednesday evening at 7pm and every Tuesday afternoon at 12:00pm, and all are welcome. Heidi's fine studio is worth the visit because once there you can see that she puts herself into her business. I came home with a bunch of texture, a big new chunky sweater. She is just outside of Moncton , New Brunswick, just off the old road to the airport in Dieppe, at 1937 Melanson Road, take exit 474. You can also check out her website at www.thewoolworks.com.
